Electric tow trucks are becoming more popular due to their cost efficiency, better performance, and lower emissions.
Global sales of electric vehicles increase by 63 per cent in 2023 and expected to keep growing in upcoming years. Rising fuel costs and the push for greener initiatives have driven numerous associations to embrace electric trucks for their armadas.
Tony Gathogo, the head of Ramp Services, Kenya airways said that they are striving for their eco-friendliness adding that electric vehicles can be savvy method for lessening working costs that is why they have adopted electric trucks utilizing feasible electric energy.
The initiative is led by the Kenya airways in collaboration with airport operators (KAA). It is intended to contribute to the sustainable development of airport aimed to reduce carbon footprint. The decision to switch to electric tow trucks is made as part of a broader initiative to embrace sustainability.
“By investing in these clean energy, the electric charge trucks will help us greatly reduce the demand for renewable energy and the carbon equivalent emissions associated with fossil fuels,” Tony states.
He further said that initiating this strategic plan of electrifying various motorized ground equipment at Kenya airways, will greatly help the airline business to reduce the overall carbon emission.
“Our goal is to support addressing climate change and reducing our carbon footprint by using electric tow trucks and implementing other environmentally friendly initiatives. From our ground operations, aviation totality contribute to around 3 to 4 per cent of the carbon emissions,” he said.
Tony explains that addition to investing to this clean energy, the electric charged trucks would help Kenya Airways (KQ) to reduce the demand for renewable energy.
“We are taking this small steps to actually play our parts in addressing climatic change course. Not only focused on flying, but also on reducing carbon emissions when handling aircraft on the ground,” he said.
Kenya airways in its drive have purchased 4 electric trucks, which will be operating within the airport ferrying cargo weighing 25 tones.
“By investing in these clean energy, we have 4 electric charge trucks that is capable of carrying 25 tones thus will help us greatly reduce the demand for renewable energy and the carbon equivalent emissions associated with fossil fuels,” Tony pointed out.
The adoption of electric trucks by Kenya Airports Authority will greatly reduce the emissions which is a wise decision especially now when climate change is wreaking havoc in the world.
