Kenya has announced a new plan to increase the country’s profile as a top sporting nation by offering rewards and national honours to world record holders. Under the plan, athletes who break world records will receive Ksh5 million (approximately $45,000), diplomatic passports, and other privileges.
Speaking at a State Reception for Faith Kipyegon and Ferdinand Omanyala at State House in Nairobi on Tuesday, President William Ruto praised the two athletes and encouraged them to continue striving for success. Kipyegon recently set two world records in a week: breaking the 1,500M in Florence, Italy and 5,000M in Paris France.
“Our sportsmen and women are heroes who have promoted Kenya’s iconic brand globally. We want to acknowledge their invaluable contribution by honoring and rewarding them accordingly,” said President Ruto.
Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, who was also present emphasized the need to monetize sports to unlock its full potential as a driver of the economy. “We must monetize sports so that this sector can exert its full potential to drive the growth of our economy,” he said.
Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama were among the other dignitaries present at the event.
The government is currently refining policies and facilities to harness the country’s potential in sports.
Kenya has a long tradition of producing world-class athletes, particularly in middle and long-distance running, and hopes that this new plan will help maintain its status as a global powerhouse in athletics.
