German army (Bundeswehr) has withdrawn all its troops from Niger following its agreed contract with Niamey coming to an end.

According to the German ambassador to Niger Hermann Nicolai “the last German troops withdrew this morning [Frida 30th August 2024] based on an agreement between the two countries.”

The German airbase in Niger served as a logistics center for the UN’s Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) peacekeeping mission, which ended in late 2023.

The relationship of the ruling military junta in Niger has since soured with Western countries leading to their withdrawal since they seized power from civilian government July 2023.

Germany follows a string of Western countries to withdraw its troops from Niger. France withdrew its troops 22 December 2023 followed by the United States on 15 September this year, a deadline set then by the Junta .

Niger and its neighboring Junta States Mali and Burkina Faso have since savored their relationship with the West and turned to Russia for military support and security ties .

Followed by leaving The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) their common regional West African block and went ahead to form The confederation of the Sahel States .
