The East African Community political confederation constitution drafting team has reports that the region is ready for a single binding document as well as a single currency through a monetary union for all the east African member states. The committee chaired by former chief justice of Uganda Benjamin Odoki and former Kenyan attorney General Amos Wako are currently in the process of taking views from citizens of the member countries constituting the East African country.
Speaking during the closure of the national consultations of the Kenyan chapter, Odoki observed that most Kenyans whose views were collected indicated their strong desire to be able to move across the region without passports and without having to change their currencies. The chairman further underscored that currently Kenyans can be able to travel to Uganda and Rwanda only with their Kenyan identification cards.
“We want to prepare a constitution that can unite East Africa politically without interfering with any country’s sovereignty.” We have gone around and we have received good reception from all the sectors. We are very satisfied with the response,“ said Odoki, adding that president William Ruto is steadfast in ensuring the constitutions are realized.
The team says that it has collected views in Kenya, Uganda and Burundi and are in steps of covering all the countries in the region. “We have visited all regions in Kenya, we listened to all shades of people including president William Ruto,” said Peter Mathuki EAC secretary general.
