Detectives from homicide department on Saturday afternoon arrested the main suspect behind the murder of a couple in Nyamakoroto village, Nyamira county which was reported on march 21.
Dennis Okari, 40, was armed with a ceska pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition was arrested following a 4 day chase that ended at the Isebania border in Migori county.
The victims both Edward Morema, 62, and Mong’ina Morema, 58, based in the U.S were found murdered in their house after they failed to turn up for breakfast that morning.
The victims were living in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the united States before coming to Kenya.
According to the initial report filed at Gesima police station, the house help Silvia Barongo, 19, was the first to become suspicious before she called the Jeremiah Bosire who was a farmhand in their home and together raised alarm attracting the attention of the villagers.
“Silvia,19, became suspicious before she called the farmhand then they raised alarm attracting villagers,” DCI said.
However, the villagers responded to alarm and came for rescue where they conducted a search where Grace Mong’ina body was discovered sprawled on a bed in a pool of blood in one of the bedrooms, while Edward’s body was found in the garage.
However, the autopsy report was released later by government pathologist that indicated the two died as a result of strangulation and blunt injuries on their heads and upper limbs.
“The body bore deep cuts on their heads while their legs and hands were tied together with electric cables,” the DCI said in a statement.
A comprehensive probe of investigation was launched by the DCI into the murder, prompting the deployment of extremely efficient homicide sleuths. A week later, the team of detectives received information that the suspect had been spotted in Ruai where he had gone into hiding after the incident.
“The officers moved with speed and as they were closing in on him, he slipped their dragnet by the skin of his teeth,” DCI explained.
Saturday afternoon, the sleuths were posing as hawkers along the border struck in one swift move and whisked the armed suspect away without firing a single shot and other traders selling merchandise at the border could decipher what had just transpired hence the suspect was arrested.
Upon searching the suspect,14 more rounds of 9mm calibre were recovered, assorted spanners, nuts, screw drivers and pliers all used for breaking into parked vehicles.
“14 rounds of 9 mm calibre were recovered, assorted spanners ,nuts screw drivers and pliers that were used in breaking parked vehicles,” DCI charged.
Additionally, the suspect is believed to be behind a number of reported robbery with violence and murder incidents in Nairobi, Nyamira, Kisii and Migori counties.
“A number of reported cases of robbery with violence and murder incidents in Nairobi, Nyamira, Kisii and Migori were transpired by the suspect,” DCI said
Meanwhile, 3 suspect have been arrested in connection with twin murders according to DCI.
The successful investigation into this case was also made possible through the research and analysis conducted by detectives based at the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau, and the Cyber Forensics team from the DCI National Forensic Laboratory that placed the main suspect at the scene of the murder on the night of the attack.
