CS Soipan Tuya has reiterated on the need for “synergy” in fighting climate change.

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry on Monday launched the Africa Climate summit website, social media platforms and registration portal. In her speech during the launch, Environment CS  Soipan Tuya said they thank the Danish Government for the support that is making the Secretariat possible.

“We hope to continue working from here, for a couple of months after the summit, to follow through some of the summit outcomes as we work towards COP28. So, to the Danish Government, if we knock your doors again for support for a few more months, please do consider extending some more support,”  she said.

She further continued to say that they should have done this many months ago. The delay was occasioned by creation of the content to go into the website, that  needed to be approved by the African Union Organs.

“To this extent, we held the Committee of African Heads of State on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) meeting, which committee is chaired by His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto, last Thursday (13/07/2023). The hybrid meeting was attended by several African heads of State or their representatives and included the government of Egypt, Algeria, Zambia, Congo Brazzaville, amongst others. The committee  approved and endorsed our concept note, albeit with some amendments as proposed by the government of Algeria,” she said.

The development of this website as well as support to the Africa Climate Summit Communications was made  possible with the gracious and generous support of the German Government through GIZ. In her remarks, she also thanked His Excellency German Ambassador, for the support and also appealed to any partners and governments present  to find an aspect of the summit to support the Summit that is set be held from September 4th to September 6th ,which is still in deficit of about USD 10Million.

Africa will be looking at the debt geometric progression and its effects on Climate Change interventions including adaptation and mitigation will also be bringing to the World its resources that include the vast untapped arable Agricultural land, its critical minerals, its renewable Energy potential as well as its carbon sinks.

“The Africa Climate Summit in other speak (words) is a Trade and Investment Summit on Climate Change. It is not a summit of blame games of North versus South, it is not a summit of who has emitted the most green house gases  or who continues to emit the most, it is a summit of Africa’s Resources versus the capital of the rest of the world, and how those two can be synergized to fight Climate Change. The Summit will make a Nairobi Africa Leaders Declaration, that proposes a new global financial architecture for Climate Change. The declaration will make a proposal on reform of the Multilateral Development banks with regard to how they deal with Africa’s debt,” she remarked.
