Canada-based Kenyan Lawyer Miguna Miguna has urged Muslim and French speaking nations to support Djibouti’s AUC candidate Yousouf Mahamoud.

Miguna took to his X (formerly twitter) account to endorse Mahamoud for the African Union Chairperson’s seat in the coming AUC elections set for February 2025. Mahamoud has received backing from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) during their meeting in Yaoundé Cameroon.

“Mahmoud Ali Yousouf of Djibouti is the candidate for all genuine Pan-Africanist for the position of chair of the AU. We urge all Pan-African, Muslims, French speaking and anti-Israel African heads of states and government to vote for this brilliant and talented young Pan-Africanist,” Miguna he tweeted.

Given Miguna’s history of opposing most political figures in Kenya, his endorsement for Yousouf Mahamoud could also be seen as a stance against Raila Odinga, with whom he has had a complicated political and personal conflicts since he was deported to Canada in 2018 following Odinga’s swearing in as the people’s president.

Miguna said Djibouti’s candidate is the best candidate for the role compared to other candidates like Kenya’s Raila Odinga whom he termed as unfit for the role. He said that Yousouf Mahamoud represents a different approach to continental leadership, viewing him as Pan-Africanist who will make a better governance, and bring regional power dynamics.

His sentiments come on the backdrop of heads of state drawn from the East Africa Community (EAC) block endorsing Odinga as their candidate for the continental position.
