Harambee Stars commenced their African World Championship journey with a 2-1 defeat against Gabon in a match held at Stade de Franceville, Gabon on Thursday evening.
In the absence of four regular defenders, coach Engin Firat was compelled to field a makeshift backline comprising Abud Omar, Amos Nondi, Johnstone Omurwa, and Dennis Nganga to support goalkeeper Patrick Matasi. Kenya displayed a promising start in the first half, and their efforts materialized in the 40th minute when Masud Juma scored, giving the visitors the lead as they headed into the break.
Gabon surged back after halftime, creating numerous opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Denis Bounga beat Matasi from a tight angle after a mistimed clearance by Johnstone Omurwa. The hosts continued to dominate the game, restricting Harambee Stars to their half for a significant portion of the second half.
Redstar Belgrade midfielder Guelor Kanga delivered the decisive blow in the 88th minute with a stunning 25-yard strike, securing all three points for the visitors.
