Nairobi county government has today unveiled 2500 workers that will help in unclogging the drainage system in preparedness for the predicted El Nino rains that was announced to be experienced in many parts of the country from September to January 2024, the event was officiated by the Governor Johnson Sakaja at Uhuru park.
The newly unveiled workers will not only help in unclogging the drainage systems within the city but also help in cleaning the city of Nairobi, the exercise of cleaning the city will continue in every part of the wards within the county with help of ward administrators.
“The first and most important measures are the cleaning and draining of our drainages to avoid flooding. The recruitment of 2500 environmental officers to clean and unclog goes a long way to ensure our preparedness for the El Nino rains,” Sakaja said while unveiling the plan on Monday.
The governor also promised that there would be an additional 1000 workers in the coming few days ”We are hiring 3500 workers and we have already hired 2500 young people today; another 1000 are coming in the few days.”
In addition, the governor said that discipline was paramount to the employees of the county, this was after he spotted two individuals within the crowd who didn’t stand up while being addressed, “We will not tolerate lack of discipline,” Sakaja said ‘This job ain’t easy, it’s real work, you must be disciplined,” he added.
The two individuals are yet to face disciplinary actions through the relevant authority as stated by the governor. The governor also urged all the county employees and Nairobi residents to be collectively responsible and serve all the people of Nairobi.
